Insects are one of the most successful groups of animals and therefore they are the greatest competitors of man in the struggle for existance. "All insects that cause significant and economic damage of 5 present or more to the crop, store products, poultry birds and domestic animals are called pests."
if an insects cause a loss of less then 5 present, the infestation is said as negligible. Insects which normally cause a loss ranging from 5-10% are minor pest and those which cause a loss of 10% or minor pest and those which cause a loss of 10% or more of yield are called major pests.

INSECT REPELLENT APPROACHES
An insect repellent is a substance applied to skin, clothing or other surface which discourage insects from landing or climbing on that surface. There are also insects repellent products available based on sound production, particularly ultrasound.
These electronic devices have been shown to have no effect as a mosquito repellent by studies done by the EPA( Environment protective Agency) and many universities.

There are many preparations form naturally occurring sources that are repellent to certain insects.
Some act as insecticide while other are only repellent.

INSECT ATTRACTION AND TRAPS
The insect attractants and traps are useful tools for monitoring insect populations to determine the need for control or the timing of control practices
In some instances, attractants and traps also used to control insect population directly by mass trapping or mating disruption.
Light trap
Light trap is a device used at night in field to collect moths and other flying insects such as , Armyworm bugs, cutworm flies. A great number of insect species are attracted to light of various wavelength!
Pitfall trap
Insects that crawl about on the ground can be captured in a pitfall trap. The simplest trap cab be considered easily by placing a can or plastic container in the ground.
